► Call up or email, long lost chums and reconnect.
► Ask questions, and refrain from doing all the talking.
► Send "Thank You" notes for kind deeds done in your favor.
► Learn how to say "NO" to avoid taking on too many volunteer

Tips to help you organize your time and activities to improve your
social wellness
Make a To Do list of the most important changes you would like to
see in the next month.
Prioritize and work in
order of importance! Learning to prioritize may be the No. 1 way to
handle more in less time. Some people use the excuse that they don't
have enough time to prioritize. The reality is they are afraid of how
large the list will be. Besides, it is easier to procrastinate about
things instead of doing them.
STOP and take two minutes right now to list the most important changes
you would like to see in the next month. Rank these items in the order
of importance. (A - C) then number them in order of their urgency then
move on to the B’s and use the same process. As you set values to the
items on your list, ask yourself whether you can eliminate or delegate
any of them.
Resist the inclination to
the ones that are quick fast or easy first. Do the most important
first, and so on. Now you have a plan and a goal for accomplishing
what you have to do.
We recommend you take 5-10
minutes at the end of each day to plan for tomorrow (this same time
can be taken at the beginning of each day). Identify and prioritize
tasks/changes necessary to reach your goals on a daily "to do" list.
Be careful not to commit every minute, allow flexibility for
unexpected and urgent tasks. Make or keep a running To Do List ,
preferably in Microsoft Outlook or similar program. Prioritize and
work in order of importance!

Cell Phone Courtesy
Some people just
can't put their Cell Phones down. How does it affect others? Ever hear
someone answer a ringing phone during a movie? Or have dinner
interrupted by the loud talker at the next table?
To drive home her point about taking calls in inappropriate places,
Whitmore tells stories about a man who talked on his phone during a
funeral and another who carried on a full conversation while in a
bathroom stall. "Cell phones were invented to make our lives easier,
not more annoying," Whitmore points out. The solution, she says, is
customer education.
"Some businesses know offensive cell phone behavior can cost them
clients and are writing wireless etiquette guidelines into company
manuals," she says. There's an appropriate time and place to use
wireless phones. "It may come to having wireless breaks — or zones —
just as there are smoking breaks and areas," she says. Her
suggestions?
Let voicemail take calls while you're in meetings. The people you're
with should take precedence over calls you want to make or receive.
If you must speak to a caller during a meeting, excuse yourself and
find a secluded area in which to talk. Outside the room is best,
because people don't realize how their voices can carry, says
Whitmore.
If you're expecting an urgent call that can't be postponed, alert your
colleagues ahead of time and excuse yourself when the call comes in.
Most of all, remember courtesy is contagious. "At the very least,
you'll feel better by leading by example," Whitmore says.
Nobody likes a public nuisance. Unfortunately, many wireless customers
have become just that. But don't blame the phones, blame the users,
says Jacqueline Whitmore, Sprint's wireless etiquette expert. "I don't
think people are deliberately trying to be offensive. It usually comes
down to a lack of awareness of just how intrusive we can become when
we're wrapped up in a phone call and lose track of what's going on
around us," she says.
As part of National Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Whitmore encourages all
consumers to promote wireless courtesy. Some more of her tips include:
Watch your tone. Speak in your regular conversational tone. "People
tend to speak more loudly than normal when on a wireless phone and
often don't recognize how distracting they can be to others," she
says.
Don't display anger during a public call. Conversations that are
likely to be emotional should be held where they won't embarrass or
intrude on others.
Use discretion when discussing private matters — and especially
confidential business topics — in front of others. You never know who
is within hearing range — it could be your biggest competitor.
Don't be confrontational. We've all been disturbed during a movie or
dinner by someone's ringing phone. Whitmore recommends letting a
person of authority — such as a theater or restaurant manager —
intervene.
According to researchers, 423 million handsets were sold in 2002, and
approximately 1 billion people around the world – nearly one in six –
now use a cell phone. “Wireless phones and other electronic devices
have become so important to keeping people in touch with information
they want and need,” said Whitmore. “It’s important to educate people
about the proper way to use these devices so that they’re still in
touch but not annoying those around them.”

School of Palm Beach, Florida
Footnote
about the dangers of cell phone usage
Health concerns show no sign of slowing the wireless expansion. So far
only a few, faint warnings have been raised, mainly by people who are
so sensitized to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobiles,
their masts and Wi-Fi that they become ill in its presence. The World
Health Organization estimates that up to three out of every hundred
people are "electro sensitive" to some extent. But scientists and
doctors - and some European governments - are adding their voices to
the alarm as it becomes clear that the almost universal use of mobile
phones may be storing up medical catastrophe for the future.
A recent authoritative
Finnish study has found that people who have used mobiles for more
than ten years are 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumor on the
same side of the head as they hold their handset; Swedish research
suggests that the risk is almost four times as great. And further
research from Sweden claims that the radiation kills off brain cells,
which could lead to today's younger generation going senile in their
forties and fifties.
There has been less
concern about masts and relay antennas, as they emit very much less
radiation than mobile phones. But people living - or attending schools
- near them are consistently exposed and studies reveal a worrying
incidence of symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness
and memory problems. There is also some suggestion that there may be
an increase in cancers and heart disease.

A Consuming Passion -
'But Everyone Has One!'
How do you handle a teen who wants the latest and greatest
of every new product?
Many kids love to consume. Dungan recommends showing them the "ploys"
that advertisers use to control their behavior. If you're tired of
hearing your kids beg and nag about what they want to buy-or what they
want you to buy-you'll appreciate Nathan Dungan's comments in Prodigal
Sons & Material Girls: How Not to Be Your Child's ATM.
In today's possession-crazed society, the average child has
unrealistic expectations about money-and expensive taste, writes
Dungan. Convinced that American kids lack a sense of financial
responsibility and that even preschoolers are being led astray by what
he calls a "three-headed monster" of consumer products companies,
media conglomerates and advertising agencies, he asks parents to
compare the marketing that is targeting children today with what the
parents experienced at the same age.
Besides identifying how he believes marketing is exploiting kids and
distorting the difference between needs and wants, Dungan recommends
that you teach your kids to analyze marketing messages. This can be a
game: for example, when you're watching a 30-minute television
program, count the product placements (the brand-name items being used
by actors), logos, promotional messages superimposed on the screen and
advertising with the ending credit lines. For older kids, try "Name
That Ploy:" analyze each billboard, magazine ad or broadcast
commercial for messages such as:
The "cool" factor. If you buy this, you too will be popular, have fun
and look good.
Bandwagon. Everyone who's anyone uses this product. If you don't buy
it, you might as well stamp "uncool" on yourself.
Celebrity testimonial. I'm a superstar and I love this, so you will,
too.
Emotion. Buy this product and you'll feel happy (or confident or
secure or loved).
Expert testimonial. I'm the expert and I'm telling you, this is what
you need.
Other techniques to alert your kids to: repetition (if you see the
name or hear the message enough times, you'll eventually buy) and
slogans (a catchy phrase is memorable).
However, Dungan also asks parents if they are modeling overspending
and under saving with such questions as:
Have you ever lived beyond your means to try to achieve higher status
with your peers?
If you reviewed your savings history with your grandparents, what
would they say?
Do you justify spending more time at work because it allows you to
spend more?
Are you willing to change your own consumer habits?
By Nathan Dungan
About the author, more information about what Dungan calls the
manipulation of kids, and what he advises parents to do, see a PBS
site called "Don't Buy It," a well-designed web site with components
such as "Commercial Questions" at pbskids.org. The "Food Ad Tricks"
section will delight the kid who's always looking for disgusting
stories.

Joke of the month
Keeping a high profile in an office
Never write a note or memo if you can phone or visit instead; everyone
wants to talk whenever you're ready.
Don't sit down to talk. The acoustics are better the higher you are, and
remember that most people are a bit deaf so speak up louder!
Try to talk with _at least_ three people between you and your listener,
so that they don't feel left out.
The very best place for a conversation is in the corridor, beside
someone else's desk. If the corridor is full, try leaning against their
cupboard or hanging over their screen.
Never warn people of your approach by knocking on their desk or
cupboard. People love surprises, especially if they're busy.
The best time to disturb someone is when they look thoughtful or are
concentrating. It's your _duty_ to give them a break now and again.
To make sure that _you_ get regular breaks, never use a "Do No Disturb"
sign. When other people use them they're only joking.
Always hold meetings around a desk. If you book a conference room
everyone will think you've got something to hide.
If the phone isn't answered after four rings, hang on. Someone will
answer it eventually, and they might like a chat, too.
Never divert calls if you're leaving your desk. Your telephone could get
into bad habits.
Try to whistle, hum or tap your fingers while you work. It is a comfort
to others to know that you're still there.
If you have to design the office layout, remember to leave lots of
wide-open spaces so that we can see and hear each other right across the
floor.
